Final Project: Magna, UT

For my final project I went to the town of Magna, UT. Magna was once a flourishing mining town. However, as the mine declined so did the town. I found out about this town last year when I just happened to drive by it. For this project I wanted to try and capture the feel of this town. I had originally hoped to capture the people that make up this town but I ended up going on an extremely cold, snowy day and ran into no one. However, I hope these photos show one aspect of this small town.

Assignment 4

Motion

Fast:

For the fast pictures I took a picture of water and one of bubbles. I had also experimented with using a slow shutter speed with water and I think it worked better with fast. The bubbles were actually really hard because they moved around so much it was difficult focusing on them.

Slow:

With slow shutter speed, I took a picture of weeds moving in the wind and water falling. With the weeds, I had this idea that I thought would work but I couldn't get the aperture I wanted so it didn't turn out how I wanted. But it taught me how interconnected shutter speed and aperture is.

Depth of Field:

Wide Depth:Narrow:

Near Object:
Far Object:Sharp:
I definitely enjoyed playing around with depth of field more than with shutter speed, which is a first for me. I usually like using a very narrow depth of field and change the shutter speed but for this assignment I liked experimenting with aperture, especially wide depth. In my mind, I've always thought that to draw attention in a photo it's best to make that the only thing in focus. But this assignment taught me how to show the focus with composition, not just making it the literal focus.

Assignment #3

"Correct Exposure"

The thing I learned during this project is the importance of a tripod. I don't own one and it was extremely hard trying to get the pictures to stay in focus and not be blurry because of the long exposure times. I'm definitely going to buy one!

Assignment #1

Edited

Ugly:
For this assignment I really wanted to learn how to use Lightroom better. This really helped me get to know the functions and get more comfortable with them. I know I still need to practice more with it but I still learned the basics which is what I wanted!
